Here’s what happens at Front and Mifflin Sts. on Sunday, May 2, 2010. There’s 231 photographs under I-95 from 1PM to 4PM. All of the photos will be up at 1PM.

There’s photos for sale at the table, and maps and photo lists, golf pencils, water and pretzels. Color copies are 5 dollars each, please ask for them by number. Every photo in the show has a number written on the ground in front of the image. If you want to buy a copy, tell the people at the table the number and they’ll get it for you.

At 4 the show is over and people are welcome to take the photos from the pilasters. PLEASE TAKE ONLY ONE, SO THAT EVERYONE WHO'S THERE CAN GET ONE. If there's images up at 5 oclock, you can go back and take another, but please wait.

There’s adhesive backing on the photos, so if you think you want to take one bring saran wrap or paper to put on the back. And bring some for other people, too. The focus of the show isn't taking photos at the end, it's just something that occurred organically as the installation moved forward.

For folks who are just wandering in who or don’t know about the maps and photos for sale at the table, please tell them how the show works. Also, there's no need for a map if you want to see the show without notions of where the photos were made. It's constructed so that you can wander through however you want.

NOW PLEASE READ THIS...

1. There's a lot of walking to see this installation. It's a total of 2 square city blocks, so be prepared. I will have bottles of water up at the front that you can grab. Bring a folding chair if desired. Also, it's about an hour to an hour and a half to do the whole thing.

2. The info/sales table will be on the Miffin St. side of the underpass. It's not necessary to stop there, but I will have maps and lists of the photos included in the installation. Remember, you can start and end anywhere in the installation, the numbers are only for ease of purchase and if you'd like to know where the photo was made.

If you are interested in buying a photo, please, PLEASE, request the image by number. Every photo has a number at the base of the pillar that corresponds to the map and you can pick up maps and golf pencils at the table in the front.

PAP workers will be manning the sales/info table from 1 to 4, the duration of the show.

There will be at least 2 color photocopies of every photo in the exhibition available for purchase, as supplies last. All photos are 5 dollars.

3. The show is from 1PM to 4PM, which means that after 4PM folks are allowed to take the photos from the pillars. I am requesting that people only take ONE photo per person. If you want to grab another, wait til 5PM and then go to town.

EVERYONE! PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT NO PHOTOS ARE TAKEN DOWN UNTIL 4PM! I WILL KILL IF ANY ARE TAKEN DOWN BEFORE THEN... I WILL KILL, I WILL KILL AND I AM NOT KIDDING.

4. Please be aware that some of the subject matter is sensitive and deals with adult themes.

5. Here are DIRECTIONS to the show.

Depending on weather and time of day, there can be a significant glare on the images that face East or West under I-95. This is one of the perils of showing photographs under a highway.

May I suggest that if the glare is prohibiting you from seeing an image, get underneath the image about a foot, if it's physically possible for you. It's worth it!

For anyone who wants to help out with the show... I could use some help cleaning under I-95 on Saturday April 24th at 1pm and Saturday May 1st at 1pm. I would be greatly appreciative for any help that anyone can give me. And I could use some help on the day of the show, too... To help hand out maps and provide info for people. We’ll have a volunteer training meeting the day before the show, May 1, at 3pm at my studio, 838 Cantrell St. Please email Ms. Marianna Peragallo to volunteer or with any questions.... mariannaatpap@gmail.com

Zoe Strauss Photography Installation Under I-95

May 2, 2010

contact: Zoe Strauss
info@zoestrauss.com

Photographer and installation artist Zoe Strauss will exhibit 231 photographs, new and selected, on Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 from 1pm to 4pm under I-95 at Front St. and Mifflin St. in South Philadelphia. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Color photocopies of the photos included in installation will be available for purchase at 5 dollars each, as supplies last. Ms. Strauss's new book America will also be available for purchase. The event will happen rain or shine. It's going to be off the hook.

This is the final I-95 show, the 10th year of Ms. Strauss's ongoing 10-year photo installation in South Philadelphia. Within the last 10 years Ms. Strauss has has published "America," a collection of photographs that was an Artforum "Best Book of 2008," been in a show and had works purchased by The Art Institute of Chicago, spent a month in Spain teaching and having a big show in conjunction with La Casa Encendida and Ivory Press, received a United States Artists fellowship, spent a month in Alaska courtesy of USArtists and the Rasmuson folks, shown in France, had 2 acclaimed solo shows at Silverstein Photography, been in the 2006 Whitney Biennial, received a Pew Fellowship in the Arts, been commissioned to create a ramp project at the Philadelphia ICA, had 8 prints purchased by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for their permanent collection, received a Leeway grant and won "friends of Arcadia award."

Of all this fanciness, the 95 show is it. It's the focus and keystone, and the rest of these amazing things are details of I-95 and are all coming back to under a highway in South Philly.

Zoe Strauss is the executive director of the Philadelphia Public Art Project.

I'm typing this and trying to keep it in third person. I mean it is a press release, this is so spectacularly surreal and awesome I just can't believe it. And I'm hyperventilating a little, I'm terrified and euphoric and sad and proud. Holy fuck.
